AT A LOSS - POST ADU

A new ADU was built in the backyard of this Morrissey home leaving remains of it's previous condition scattered throughout the yard: piles of pavers, empty pots, broken fixtures, and a field of dead weeds.

The owner, overwhelmed by the task at hand, called us to make this dry and dusty space into a paradise.

"I want a lawn for my future grandchildren," she told us. "A paradise where I can relax and enjoy my afternoons when I soon retire."

An old deck had to be replaced as, over the years, it's structure berneath the ceramic tiles was deteriorating. Stripped to the pilings, it was rebuilt, retiled, and surrounded with steps made of a bamboo composite - rich in color and affordable.

To help give the back houseThe thin 4x4 posts did the job, but looked too thin and out of scale, so they were wrapped in redwood and detailed with hand carved "vines" - a theme to be repeated throughout the garden.

To create a feeling of privacy and space, an "arch/arbor" was built, using redwood carved with the vine theme. A flowering vine will soon grow into the side fences; softening the edges and adding color.

A small fountain was built near the deck and patio area, offering the pleasant sound of water upon rock to not only soothe, but to mask the sound of the passing cars. From it, a "river" of rounded riverstones winds its way along the side of the yard,, dissapearing into the distance.

A path of flat stones leads you from the patio, over the river, and over a handbuilt Japanese style bridge (also featuring the thematic carving), before taking you around the lemon tree, rosemary, and an assortment of succulents and butterfly plants. Planted between many of the stones is an assortment of creeping thymes which, when walked upon, releases its intoxicating aroma.
The homeowner wanted an outdoor shower for guests to rinse off after a day at the beach, so we built one with an additional faucet for feet rinsing or dog bathing.

The side entrance to the yard needed a new gate/entryway, so this new gate was built re-using the redwood steps from the old deck. A keypad entry was added after installation.

A wooden "wall" was installed to conceal the array of watering valves.
Half barrels and a galvanized feeding trough were used to plant and grow herbs and seasonal vegetables, using the neighboring garage wall as a rustic backdrop.
